From the Photographer’s Introduction: I began this work with a keen awareness of how often and variously the contributors have been photographed. I didn’t find many examples of those embarrassing stock poses, thank goodness, but there were a lot of very appealing photographs of this impressive assortment of poets, fiction writers, and essayists. My challenge was to figure out how my photographs should be different, how they might support the concept of this book—saying something about the writers at home—and do the essential work of any effective portrait: gesture toward persona. What I wanted most was a set of pictures that didn’t seem contrived, or even posed. My modest hope is that the photographs here reflect the occasion of these accomplished writers’ having welcomed me—and thereby readers of this collection—into their homes, into the distinctive spaces where they live and work.—Rob McDonald
